Grinding Medium

The wet rod mill uses steel rods as the grinding medium. Generally, the length of grinding rods should not exceed 7 meters, as excessively long rods tend to entangle, making operation difficult.

  • The diameter of the grinding rodstypically ranges from 75 to 150 mm.
  • The rods should have sufficient stiffness and hardnessto remain straight during operation without bending.
  • They should not be too brittle, ensuring that they wear downrather than break into fragments prematurely.
  • When worn down to a sufficiently small diameter, the rods should break into small pieces, allowing them to be easily discharged from the mill.
  • If the rods are too soft, they may bend inside the mill, causing premature wear and tangling, leading to operational inefficiencies and downtime.

Application Scenarios

  1. Gravity or Magnetic Separation for Tungsten, Tin, and Other Rare Metals– Used to prevent over-grinding that could negatively affect separation efficiency.
  2. First-Stage Grinding in a Two-Stage Process– When grinding from 20–6mm down to 3–1mm, rod mills offer higher production capacity and efficiency than ball mills. This is because rods, compared to balls of the same weight, have a smaller surface area, making them less effective for fine grinding but more efficient for coarse grinding.
  3. Alternative to Short-Head Cone Crushers for Fine Crushing– In some cases, rod mills can be used as a substitute for short-head cone crushers for fine crushing applications.

Working Principle

The rod mill is driven by a motor through a reducer and a large peripheral gear or by a low-speed synchronous motor directly via a large peripheral gear.

  • Inside the cylinder, steel rodsserve as the grinding medium.
  • Centrifugal force and frictionlift the rods to a certain height before they cascade or fall.
  • The raw materialis continuously fed into the cylinder through the feed inlet.
  • The moving grinding rods crush the material, which is then discharged through overflow or continuous feeding forcefor the next stage of processing.
